Exciting day today!

We didn’t just go to the beach.  Ok, we went to the beach. In the morning, and then again in the afternoon. But we also went out! Wooooh!

Ok, not far. Just to the local metropolis – Trincomalee. A half hour bus ride down the coast, and a bit of a dump when all’s said and done. But hey, it’s different. And we had to go. First, because we needed to check transport to Colombo – hopefully in a couple of days, though we’ll believe it when it happens. But with luck and a fair wind, we could be on our way day after tomorrow, so we needed to find out whether we could get to the airport without a repeat of the hellish overnight train that brought us here. Google didn’t seem to think so, but we’ve learned not to place too much faith in Google.

So we went to ask at the train station, to find that it could be done, but only by getting up at sparrow fart and changing at Gal Oya, and as we’ve discovered, there’s many a slip, and all in all…So we also went to the bus station, where we found that ‘regular’ bus No 49 goes on the hour, every hour. No guaranteed seats, no air con, could be seven and a half pretty dodgy hours. But it exists. Hoorah. So that’s that. Next, a pharmacy, a fruit shop (I’m gagging for a mango), and enough cash to pay our bill.

Jobs done, we caught a tuk-tuk to a place called Double Cheeseburger, ‘cos we’re both gagging for something other than the nice but in truth a bit samey Sri Lankan we’ve been eating for the last couple of weeks. Place looked way more humble than we’d anticipated, but it lived up to its reviews: nice burgers, mayonnaise, fresh lettuce and tomato, big pile of proper crunchy fries with creamy garlic mayo. Yum! Now we’ve just got back, and I need to close this here so we can watch an episode of Fargo before Virle falls asleep. She gets dead dozey after a big nosh.
