Last day in Shangri-La

Libong Beach Resort, Libong Island, Thailand

All good things come to an end, they say – and they’re right of course.

We’ve run out of islands to hop, at least for the moment, so tomorrow we have to leave all this and hit the Thai mainland for the first time.

In truth, if truth be told – and why shouldn’t it be – it’s about time. Lovely as it is to hang around on lovely tropical beaches with nowt to do but mop up the rays and go see the wee fishies, there comes a point where the idea of actually doing something begins to have a definite appeal. So it’s off to the national park for us, en route to Bangkok.

But that’s tomorrow. Right now, after a hectic day of snorkeling, kayaking, paddle-boarding and just plain lolling around on the beach, we’re looking forward to our last evening on Koh Libong, and have just booked for dinner at the streetside restaurant that does ‘the best coffee on the island’, having been won over t’other day by the maitre d’s promise of ‘Fresh fish, caught today, one kilo, barbecue, serve with rice and mix vegetable – 400 baht.’ At about nine pounds, that’s a lot more than we’re used to paying for dinner (for both of us), but we’re confident it’ll be worth every baht. And then some.

And now, following our showers in our new guesthouse (we’ve had to move, having failed to notice this to be a long weekend and national holiday, leaving accommodation hard to find), we’re cooling off with the help of our air con and fan, while summoning up the energy for, maybe, a return to dugong tower, and one last chance of a sighting of the ever-elusive beast.
