Went for a walk along the beach last night, having been told this is prime giant turtle time – three were spotted crawling up the beach a couple of days ago. No turtles, but we did get a bonus when Virle stopped to take a closer look at something on the beach that looked somehow a bit…odd. A phone torch revealed a broken coconut shell heaving with hermit crabs. They clearly didn’t appreciate the attention, and headed for the hills. By the time I’d managed to get my flash working they were nearly all gone. But it made a cheery end to the day.
Today has been A Day of Rest. We’ve done naff all other than lounge around on the beach. It’s been great!
Ended up going out for dinner and found ourselves on a bit of a wild goose chase. Following Google directions led us to an impenetrable hedge along the main drag where the path to tonight’s selected hostelry was supposed to be. Ok, Plan B it is: returning to the roadside place where we had curry and rice for lunch yesterday.
Same again please! But no. Curry and rice is lunchtime only. Sob. Ok, from the three item menu, we chose option one: grilled giant prawns and vegetables. A couple of minutes later the guy running the shack emerged from the kitchen to pop next door to a vege stall, returning with a bag of tomatoes, cucumbers and who knew what else. Then back into the kitchen for a good half hour’s crashing and bashing, till out came a large platter piled high with veges and a big pile of seriously big prawns: a dozen or so, each the size of your little finger. And absolutely delicious it was – the prawns tasty and firm-textured, the veges (fried and raw on the same plate) tasty and plentiful.
The bill turned out north of expectations, at 6,000 (more than three times yesterday’s curry & rice), but as I said to Virle, how often d’you get a wonderful blowout like that for fifteen quid.
